A fret level, crown and polish corrects uneven or worn frets, helping reduce buzzing and improve playability, note clarity and string bending. On older or well-used instruments, it can be essential for achieving a properly balanced setup.

A typical fret level, crown and polish may include:

• Assessing fret wear and unevenness

• Checking the neck and fingerboard condition

• Levelling the frets

• Re-crowning the fret tops

• Smoothing and polishing the frets

• Reshaping sharp fret ends where appropriate

• Cleaning and oiling the fingerboard

• Completing a full setup after the fretwork

• A final playability check

 

Why prices vary

The final price depends on the condition of the frets, the number of problem areas and the type of instrument. A neck with light, even wear will usually fall towards the lower end of the range, while more extensive wear, loose frets, difficult fingerboards or additional setup work may cost more.

What is not included

Strings and replacement parts are charged separately. Loose or damaged frets, extensive fingerboard repairs, refrets, nut replacement and structural repairs are not included in the standard price.

If the frets are too low, badly damaged or unsuitable for levelling, a refret may be the better option. I will explain the available options and confirm the cost before carrying out any additional work.
