A refret replaces frets that are too worn, low, damaged or uneven to be corrected through levelling. It restores consistent playability across the neck and can improve note clarity, string bending and overall feel.

A typical refret may include:

• Assessing fret and fingerboard condition

• Removing the worn frets

• Cleaning and preparing the fret slots

• Re-shooting the fingerboard and re-radiusing

• Installing new frets

• Levelling, crowning and polishing the new frets

• Cleaning and conditioning the fingerboard

• Completing a full setup after the fretwork

• A final playability check

 

Why prices vary

The final price depends on the neck construction, fingerboard material, fret type and condition of the instrument. Bound fingerboards, lacquered maple boards, differing fret sizes/materials, damaged fret slots and more extensive fingerboard work may increase the cost.

 

What is not included

Strings, replacement parts, nut replacement, major fingerboard repairs, refinishing and structural repairs are charged separately.

 

A new nut may be required after a refret if the existing nut slots are too low for the new fret height. Any additional work will be discussed and agreed with you before it is carried out.
